Virgo of the week - Amy Winehouse

I’ve been meaning to write about Amy Winehouse for some time. I don’t know much about her, but the press finds her fascinating, and by all accounts she’s an outstanding singer. I kind of associate her with Pete Doherty, another musician who has been hitting the headlines for most of the wrong reasons, with particular emphasis on drugs. Pete Doherty’s a Pisces, while Amy Winehouse is of the opposite sign, Virgo.

There’s a link between Virgo and music, and I think it’s something to do with accuracy. Good music can’t just be churned out - it has to be fine-tuned. And however chaotic the artist might seem, they’ve got a method, which they’ll usually stick to. They’ve also got a fine eye for detail, and they know what sounds good.

The link between Virgo and drugs isn’t so obvious. The text-book Virgo is clean living and healthy, not the kind of person to go on a wild bender.

Nonetheless Virgos have at least one area of their life which is a complete mess, which is by and large out of control. They have everything else sorted out, but there’s a dark corner, which can turn into a black hole, sucking everything in, and threatening the very fabric of their existence.

There’s also the question of perfection. It’s something that many Virgos aspire to, but in practice it’s impossible to find. And if they’re uncomfortable with an imperfect world, one way of dealing with the problem is to use drugs. The problem gets dulled, as the chemicals they ingest reconfigure their brain chemistry - and perhaps, in a fleeting, blissful moment, the drug-taking Virgo has a feeling of harmony and oneness.

Looking at Amy Winehouse, and in her horoscope she has a conjunction between the Sun and Mercury, in the sign Virgo. Sun-Mercury conjunctions are very common, and they can give people a great ability to communicate. However all things being equal, these conjunctions are unfortunate. Mercury represents one’s logic and rationality, and when this planet gets too close to the Sun there can be difficulties. The reality of the situation can be dimmed, and attempts to analyse oneself and one’s environment can be frustrated.

Matters aren’t helped by the fact that Amy Winehouse’s Neptune is making a stressful aspect to both the Sun and Mercury. Neptune is the planet of confusion, it also has a strong connection with drugs. So the careful order of Virgo is being undermined by Neptune’s malefic influence.

At least, Neptune can be malefic. Aside from drugs and chaos, it rules spirituality, and perhaps Amy Winehouse needs a greater awareness of this aspect of her life. Because Neptune will manifest one way or another, and by letting go of the drugs she’ll be able to express this planet in a more healthy and enlightening way.

The fact that Amy Winehouse’s Mercury has stressful contacts to both the Sun and Neptune has implications for her health. In astrology the planet Mercury is connected with the lungs, and we know that this part of her body is damaged, apparently because of her smoking and drug-taking. It’s in fact been reported that she has substantially reduced lung capacity.

From reading the papers, it would appear that Amy Winehouse is going through a difficult period of her life, and this is certainly confirmed by astrology. Saturn is currently moving though Virgo, making a conjunction to her Sun and Mercury. It’s perhaps this influence which has triggered her bronchial problems.

Saturn’s influence will continue for most of 2009, and it could be make or break for her. She must get herself together, otherwise the health situation could become critical.

Finally, it seems that Amy Winehouse’s big Karmic challenge is to be logical, to use her brain to understand her environment. The big picture can wait for later, the grand actions can be put on hold, the rash behaviour can be a thing of the past. She needs to think about what she’s doing, and before making decisions she must look at both sides of the coin. Sometimes a bit of doubting and questioning can be a good thing.
